MCS & EIs
People with sensitivities to multiple types of chemicals are typically suffering from an Environmental Illness (EI). MCS is the name often given to describe being sensitive to multiple chemicals. MCS is an EI. Current research (see T.C. Theoharides, PhD, MD) has shown that the reactions to triggers individuals with chemical sensitivities experience have a basis in mast cell function and mast cell degranulation.
Is MCS a mental illness?
MCS is not a mental illness. It is a real, physiological illness and not psychological. Most physicians are not trained to recognize, diagnose, or treat chemical sensitivities and EIs. Many healthcare professionals deny they exist.
Are mast cell disorders the same as MCS?
Mastocytosis, Mast Cell Activation Syndrome (MCAS), MCS are all mast cell activation spectrum disorders. Current research (see Theoharides, PhD, MD) has shown that the reactions people experience when they are exposed to the chemicals and triggers to which they react have a basis in mast cell function and mast cell degranulation.
